Things to Consider
The Medical/Prescription Drug plan contains many changes that are new for most retirees.
Because we understand that different people have different needs, the new plan contains greater
flexibility and choice. To help you prepare for making your best choices, there are a number of
things you need to consider as you prepare for open enrollment:
- Which of the plan coverage options will best meet the needs of me and my family?
- What were my health needs last year? Was this a typical year for medical expenses?
- Do I anticipate these expenses to change next year? Would my needs be better met a higher
level of coverage?
- How often am I and my dependents likely to visit a doctor? Other health care providers?
- What kind of coverage or insurance can I receive from other sources?
An enrollment kit will be mailed to you in late October to assist you with the enrollment
process. This kit will contain an enrollment guide and a worksheet personalized with your
information to walk you through your plan options and prepare you for enrolling on the phone
or through the internet web connection. When you receive these materials, follow these key
steps for making appropriate decisions for you and your family:
- Review open enrollment materials carefully - to choose the right coverage, you need
to have a good understanding of these plans.
- Ask questions - If you are unsure of how a plan works or how you will be affected, be sure
to attend upcoming retiree meetings in October. If you still have questions, the Spectrum
Benefits Call Center - accessed through a toll-free number - will be available during the
enrollment period.
- Discuss benefit options with your spouse - to make the right decision, you need to
know what benefits you or your spouse may have under another program.
- Consult your tax and financial advisors - enlist help from professionals that can advise
you on the best choices for you financially and will assist you in making appropriate
decisions.
- Complete your personalized enrollment worksheet - this worksheet helps you keep
track of your choices and determine what the effect on your income will be before you
enroll. This will be an invaluable reference for you when you go through the enrollment
process.
